1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais 442
In 1990 I asked my mother to purchase a standard Calais for me so that I could have a new car when I got home from my tour of duty in Germany. While she sat there finishing the papers on a standard Calais, she kept looking at the 442 there on the showroom floor. She decided that that car was me, that is what I should be driving around in, a bright red Olds 442, not some "standard" car. (photos of that car) I drove the car for 6 years, then my young bride decided that the car "wasn't running right" and that we need to trade it in. She worked on me for a few days and then we went and looked at the "new" Mustangs. We decided that the forest green one was pretty sharp and talked to the salesman. He gave us an incredible deal that just sounded great to us, so we traded in the car. That Mustang was a huge mistake, and I lost my 442 forever. About 2005, I did a search on the internet for the VIN on that car. It was last registered to a woman in Grand Rapids in 1999. Since then, it has no activity. That car's VIN is 1G3NF14A9LM724957 if anyone out there has any kind of idea of what happened to my old car.
So, when I couldn't find that car, I set up an Ebay Favorites search. Every day I got emails with details of 1990 442 parts and cars. Several cars came up, all of which I had no money to bid with. Finally in February this car came up. I bid, I won. Only problem, I had to go to Harrisburg, PA to get it. Well, not really much of a problem, I had to go to Dover, DE for some Army Reserve training. So, the seller agreed to hold the car (after my payment anyway) and I hauled a trailer behind the truck to pick it up. We loaded it with no problems, it almost fell off before I got out of PA and after another tie down, I made it to Dover. So, as my life with my new 442 develops, I will be posting progress photos and updates.

I got my car home, my kids love it. They have been fighting over who gets it when they start driving. I told them that there were three colors of 442s built that year, Red, White and Black and that I was thinking maybe I should look and see if I can collect the other two colors. They like that idea, that way we can each have one of a different color.
I ran into my first real problem with this black car. The passenger side window fell off it's track. I guess I get to try and re-install that this week. Maybe next weekend.

I have found that I have a water leak above the drivers side rear side window. I still have to fix the passenger door window. I went to two large junk yards in Grand Rapids and they do not have 1990 used cars there. They tell me it is too old. I think I have finally overcome the leaky exhaust. I think it was coming in through the trunk. So good to have that smell gone. And I now have AC, wow does that make a great difference. I still need to fix the tripometer, still need a bunch of interior parts, especially the radio and gear shift console. I wish someone had one of those for me.
Here is another interesting chart. This is the fuel MPG chart since I purchased it. Funny how the MPG was better when it wasn't running quite right.
